Position description

Reporting to the Manager of Athletics, the Athletics and Recreation Intern plays a vital role in fostering an engaging and dynamic athletic environment while developing key leadership, organizational, and event management skills. This position provides hands-on experience in the planning, execution, and enhancement of game day operations across multiple university sports programs. The intern will gain exposure to event logistics, facility management, staff coordination, and community engagement, ensuring a positive experience for athletes, officials, spectators, and personnel. Additionally, the intern will support the Coordinator of Athletics in various administrative and developmental initiatives. The position follows a Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule from August to March, aligned with the 91¿´Æ¬ Athletics calendar.

Key Developmental Responsibilities:

  • Event Leadership: Coordinate and oversee game day operations for multiple sports (e.g., basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, swimming), cultivating skills in sports management and organizational efficiency.
  • On-Site Event Management: Serve as a leader during athletic competitions, ensuring seamless execution of all game day elements while adapting to evolving circumstances.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Develop professional communication skills by liaising with coaches, officials, athletic trainers, facility staff, and campus security.
  • Team Development & Supervision: Provide leadership in managing and scheduling part-time staff, student workers, and volunteers, fostering teamwork and mentoring opportunities.
  • Financial Oversight: Gain hands-on experience in managing event-related financial procedures, including cash float reconciliation and debit/credit payment tracking.
  • Facility & Logistics Management: Strengthen problem-solving abilities through pre-event setup, post-event teardown, and compliance with university and conference policies.
  • Risk Management & Crowd Control: Work collaboratively with 91¿´Æ¬ Security to implement crowd safety measures and emergency response protocols.
  • Community Engagement & Promotions: Assist in marketing, live streaming, and promotional efforts to enhance visibility and audience participation in athletic events.
  • Professional Writing & Reporting: Develop writing and analytical skills through post-game write-ups for the Mounties Athletics website and AUS/ACAA platforms.

Qualifications for Growth:
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree with participation in competitive university varsity sports.
  • Experience in athletics administration, event coordination, or game day operations.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Availability for evenings, weekends, and holiday schedules.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with AUS and ACAA sports regulations.
  • Graduate of 91¿´Æ¬
  • Experience coordinating multi-sport events or large-scale athletic functions.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
